Staying Fit at Your Desk

It’s challenging to stay (or get) fit when you sit most of your day. Lack of physical activity can lead to health problems like diabetes, heart disease, and even certain types of cancer as well as undesired weight. Unfortunately, most of our jobs require us to be sedentary, so how can you balance your desk job with your health? What are some tips to stay fit while working at your desk? Follow these helpful tips to help stay fit and active at your desk!

Stretch at Your Desk

Take 30 seconds to one minute to stretch to touch your toes, do some jumping jacks, or even desk yoga. Getting your blood pumping is not only good for your physical but also your mental health. Research shows physical activity increases your productivity and creativity.

Alternate Between Sitting and Standing

Stand whenever you can – make phone calls while standing. Purchase a standing desk or use a high countertop to alternate between sitting and standing. Try 30 minutes of sitting then switch!

Skip the Elevator

It’s easy and convenient...yes but, why not get those extra steps and save some electricity while you are at it? Additionally, try parking away from your building, so you are forced to walk further.

Take Advantage of Breaks

It can be tempting to relax on your lunch break, but your body can benefit from a short walk. You don’t need to go far to be effective. Remember every step counts! Try a wall squat, walking lunges or even a minute of pushups to build some more activity into your day which will help to raise your heart rate, balance out your health and boost mental energy. Sometimes when we’re sitting all day long it can cause us to have mental fatigue even though we’re not physically fatigued.
